The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has introduced a fully digital application process for international driving permits, allowing Thai citizens to apply via the “Pao Tang” mobile app without visiting a DLT office. The service, available 24/7, enables users to complete their application, verify their identity, make payments, and receive their permit by post—offering a convenient option ahead of the busy Songkran travel season.
As many prepare for international trips during Thai New Year, the DLT reminds travelers that an international permit may be required to drive legally abroad. The permit is valid in countries that recognize the 1949 Geneva Convention, such as the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as those under the 1968 Vienna Convention, including Germany, Switzerland, Brazil, and Bahrain. Travelers can check destination requirements on the official DLT website.
The application fee remains 505 baht, with a 60-baht postal delivery charge. A processing fee by Krungthai Bank is waived until the end of 2025. The digital service, launched in collaboration with Krungthai Bank PCL, has seen growing demand since its introduction in December 2024.
From December 13, 2024, to February 28, 2025, Bangkok recorded the highest number of applications through the “Pao Tang” app, with 9,878 permits issued. Other high-demand provinces include Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Chonburi, and Pathum Thani, as well as Chiang Mai, Rayong, Phuket, Nakhon Pathom, and Songkhla.
With international travel expected to increase, the DLT sees the service as a timely and efficient solution for those needing quick permit approvals.
