Residents and tourists on Koh Tao have expressed growing concerns over the accumulation of tens of thousands of tons of garbage, which remains largely unaddressed. The issue is particularly pressing as the island, part of Koh Phangan district in Surat Thani province, is a popular international tourist destination.

With daily waste generation reaching 15-20 tons, the island’s landfill—spanning only 4 rai (approximately 1.6 acres)—is unable to accommodate the increasing volume. As a result, waste has accumulated into a towering heap, emitting strong odors across the area.

Environmental risks have also escalated, as rainwater runoff from the landfill carries pollutants into the sea, threatening marine ecosystems. Additionally, the growing waste problem has contributed to a rise in disease-carrying pests, including rats, cockroaches, and flies.
Local authorities and community members have voiced concerns, urging for effective waste management solutions to address the crisis.
