Koh Samui authorities launched a coordinated inspection on March 5, 2025, targeting foreign workers in response to public complaints about disturbances and concerns over illegal employment. The operation, led by the Hundred Islands Task Force in cooperation with Koh Samui Police, Immigration, and ISOC Region 4, focused on rental accommodations in the Mae Nam area.
Officials inspected a rental unit near Wat Phu Khao Thong School, where they found 100 foreign workers—56 men and 44 women. A review of their work permits confirmed that all had the necessary documentation. However, authorities conducted random drug tests on 19 individuals, identifying three with traces of methamphetamine in their system. These individuals were detained and taken to Koh Samui Police Station for further legal proceedings. Additionally, one foreign worker employed as a delivery driver was arrested for working without a valid permit.
The operation aligns with the directives of Surat Thani Governor Thiratum Suphawibulphon, who has prioritized cracking down on illegal employment and ensuring compliance with labor laws. The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Department of Provincial Administration and the Ministry of Interior to regulate foreign employment and address concerns about unauthorized work. Several high-ranking officials, including provincial and district representatives, participated in overseeing the enforcement efforts.
