Wildfires Continue to Threaten Tap Lan National Park in Nakhon Ratchasima

Wildfires remain a significant threat in Tap Lan National Park, located in Thailand’s northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province. The blazes, which have been burning for several days, continue to be a challenge for park officials and emergency responders. As of February 16, 2025, efforts to contain the fire have been successful in preventing its spread, but much work remains.

Prawatsart Chanthep, the chief of Tap Lan National Park, reported that firefighters have been able to control the fire within an area of approximately 80 hectares. However, the rugged terrain of the mountainside, which is steep and difficult to access, has complicated firefighting efforts. Despite these challenges, local park staff and volunteers from surrounding villages have managed to keep the fires from escalating.

The fires were initially put out in the Khao Khok Chang area of the park on February 13. However, on the following day, flames reappeared about one kilometre away on the same mountainside. Park officials suspect that the fire was intentionally set by illegal loggers, who may have started the blaze with the hope that once the fires were extinguished, they could more easily access the area to cut down trees. Police are investigating the arson, as they attempt to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Although the fires have caused damage to the forest floor by consuming dried leaves and branches, larger trees have remained largely unaffected. The continuing investigation aims to address the growing concern over illegal activities that are contributing to environmental damage in the region. Authorities are determined to bring those responsible for starting the fires to justice and prevent future incidents.

In conclusion, while firefighters and volunteers have made progress in controlling the blazes, the combination of challenging terrain and potential criminal activity means the threat is not yet over.
