Pattaya City Police have rejected allegations made by a British tourist in the UK’s Daily Mail, insisting that proper legal procedures were followed in his detention and release. Police Chief Col. Nawin Theerawit addressed the claims on February 7, stating that the 55-year-old man, identified as Andrew, had been lawfully detained after damaging a vehicle barrier on November 22, 2024.
According to police, Andrew was initially taken into custody at 8:30 PM to de-escalate the situation and was fined 100 baht before being released. However, he was later arrested again following an outburst at his accommodation, which had canceled his booking due to previous complaints about disorderly conduct. Authorities say all his personal belongings, including cash and bank cards, were returned and documented with photographic evidence.
Col. Nawin emphasized that the station’s holding cells are monitored by CCTV 24 hours a day and cleaned daily. He refuted Andrew’s claims of assault, a 36-hour detention, and theft of £1,230, calling them inaccurate and incomplete. Police maintain that the tourist was intoxicated at the time of the incident, a detail omitted from his account to Daily Mail.
