Foreigners Arrested for Running Illegal Child Care Centre on Koh Phangan

Authorities in Surat Thani have apprehended a group of foreigners on charges related to the illegal operation of a daycare centre for foreign children on Koh Phangan. The arrests, which took place on 27 January 2025, involved five Russians, two Ukrainians, and one Myanmar national. The individuals, aged between 40 and 50, were detained after police raided the facility in Moo 4 village of tambon Ban Tai.

The daycare centre had reportedly been running for approximately four months, offering services to around 20 children, mostly offspring of foreign nationals residing on the island. Authorities moved swiftly to shut down the operation after confirming that it was being run without the required legal permits or licenses. The foreign workers employed at the centre, including both men and women, were arrested and are now facing legal action for operating an unregistered daycare service.

This raid is part of ongoing efforts by local authorities to ensure the safety and regulation of childcare services, particularly for expatriates on Koh Phangan. The island, a popular tourist destination, has seen an increase in the number of foreign residents, making the need for properly regulated services such as daycare more critical.

Officials have not yet disclosed whether the children attending the centre have been placed with local guardians or if alternative childcare arrangements have been made.

Those arrested in connection with the illegal operation include three Russian women, two Russian men, one Ukrainian man, one Ukrainian woman, and a woman from Myanmar. Further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
