Koh Samui Hosts Historic Marriage Equality Registration Event

On 23 January 2025, Koh Samui witnessed a significant milestone in the promotion of gender equality and LGBTQIAN+ rights as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Koh Samui Office, alongside local authorities and several tourism stakeholders, hosted the “Samui Said Yes” marriage registration event. The occasion marked the official implementation of Thailand’s marriage equality law, which came into effect on this date. The event also served to position Koh Samui as an inclusive and welcoming destination for LGBTQIAN+ travelers and couples worldwide.

Ms. Nitcharat Wanichcharoen, Director of the TAT Koh Samui Office, highlighted the importance of the event in supporting the newly established equal marriage law. She emphasized that Koh Samui aims to be an inclusive destination, open to all travelers, including the LGBTQIAN+ community, which is recognized for its high purchasing power and potential to contribute significantly to the local economy. Wanichcharoen also noted that the event was a precursor to the upcoming Samui Pride Nation event in June, which had garnered positive feedback from both local and international tourists the previous year.

Five LGBTQ+ couples participated in the inaugural “Samui Said Yes” ceremony, officially registering their marriages on this historic day. In addition, one couple from nearby Koh Phangan joined the occasion. The ceremony, held at the picturesque Sea Sun Cafe in Bangrak Bay, was set against the backdrop of a stunning sunset. Guests were treated to views of the iconic Big Buddha Temple and the area’s renowned viewpoint overlooking the landing and takeoff paths of Koh Samui’s airport. The event successfully showcased Koh Samui’s natural beauty while reinforcing its appeal as a romantic destination.

To further enhance the celebration, couples who registered their marriages were offered a range of special privileges, including a romantic spa package provided by several local spas, such as Cave Rai Ra Beach Spa, Natural Wing Health Spa & Resort, Melati Spa, Zense Spa, and Eranda Spa Villa. Additionally, each couple received skincare products from Honey Rose Garden, promoting local businesses and supporting the community’s economy.

LGBTQIAN+ couples wishing to register their marriages can now do so at the Koh Samui District Office during business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm). Required documents include the couple’s ID cards and two witness ID cards. For further details, individuals can contact the Koh Samui District Office at 077-420883 or 098-0172627.
