Thailand to Expand Domestic Train Production, Focus on Passenger Cars

Thailand is moving forward with its ambitious plan to produce trains and locomotives domestically, aiming to reduce reliance on imports and support local industries. The “Thai-made Train” initiative, which recently unveiled the first prototype passenger car, “Sud Khop Fah” or “Beyond Horizon,” demonstrates that Thailand can achieve self-sufficiency in railcar production.

The prototype, developed under the “Thai First” project, is ready for service and set to be delivered to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) for use on various routes. It has successfully passed over 5,000 kilometers of testing, meeting international standards. Equipped with business- and first-class-inspired features, the 24-meter-long train boasts advanced amenities such as personal screens, robotic food service, and accessibility for disabled passengers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has championed this initiative, directing the Ministry of Transport, the Railway Technology Research and Development Office (RTR), and the Ministry of Industry to collaborate on localizing train production. The policy also emphasizes knowledge transfer from countries like Turkey, which have successfully developed domestic rail manufacturing capabilities.

The SRT is considering two formats for expanding the project: tourist trains and long-distance passenger trains. The Thai-made train project team has expressed readiness to begin production immediately, contingent on SRT approval. While the development of locomotives will require more advanced technology and time, the focus on passenger cars highlights an urgent demand for additional carriages to support Thailand’s growing rail needs.

Currently, the Thai-made train incorporates approximately 44% local content from domestic manufacturers, underscoring the potential for reducing costs and fostering technological independence. Despite the challenges associated with producing locomotives, stakeholders view this initiative as a critical step toward building a sustainable and cost-effective rail system in Thailand.

The inaugural journey of the “Sud Khop Fah” will take place soon, marking a significant milestone in Thailand’s transportation innovation efforts.
