Thailand’s Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage to Boost Rainbow Tourism, Add US$2 Billion to Economy

Thailand is set to see a significant economic boost from its recent move to legalize same-sex marriage, with the law expected to take effect in January. An Agoda-commissioned study reveals that this landmark change could attract an additional 4 million tourists annually, generating approximately US$2 billion in revenue and creating 152,000 full-time equivalent jobs. The increased tourism and spending could lift Thailand’s GDP by 0.3%.

The new legislation, which makes Thailand the first Southeast Asian country and the third in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, grants same-sex couples rights similar to those of heterosexual couples, including inheritance, tax allowances, and child adoption. This development is seen as a milestone for LGBTQQIP2SAA rights in Thailand, a country already popular among LGBTQQIP2SAA travelers, with tourism representing a vital sector of its economy.

Agoda highlighted Thailand’s potential to capture a larger share of the US$200 billion global LGBTQQIP2SAA tourism market, with Thai cities likely to become top destinations for weddings and related services such as hospitality and catering. In a region where many countries do not recognize same-sex rights, Thailand is emerging as a progressive destination for inclusive tourism.

The nation’s tourism numbers have rebounded this year, with 30 million visitors so far, setting a positive trajectory to meet the 36.7 million target. In 2019, nearly 40 million visitors contributed $60 billion in revenue, underscoring tourism’s importance in Thailand’s economy.
