Egat Plans Life Extension for Coal-Fired Power Units

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) is set to extend the operational life of two coal-fired power units through planned refurbishments aimed at maintaining low-cost electricity production. The refurbishment project, focusing on Units 8 and 9, involves essential maintenance to improve efficiency without full-scale rebuilding, allowing the facilities to continue generating power as they near retirement age.

This initiative is part of Egat’s strategy to stabilize Thailand’s power tariffs, as coal remains an affordable fuel source for electricity. A feasibility study is currently underway to assess the technical and financial scope of the refurbishment, with the results expected by 2025. These findings will determine both the potential lifespan extension and the overall budget required for the project, according to an Egat official who requested anonymity.
