Surat Thani Officials Address Impact of Burmese Center Closure

On September 10, 2024, Surat Thani Provincial Education Officer, Mr. Chokdee Sattakarn, along with Deputy Education Director, Ms. Panna Phromwichian, and legal expert Mr. Suphanan Chanthra, took swift action to address the situation surrounding the closure of the Burmese language learning center in the province. Concerns were raised after an order to shut down the center, prompting a meeting with key stakeholders to explore solutions for those affected.

The meeting, which included Phra Maha Sanya Thirasanyamo, Ph.D., and Phra Palat Aphisit Wisantho, Secretary to the Abbot of Phunphin District, as well as teachers from Panyatheepwitthayanusorn School, focused on addressing the impact of the closure on local students, many of whom are the children of migrant workers. It was reported that Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had expressed concerns over the issue, urging for a solution that would ensure students continue to have access to education.

Efforts are being made to integrate students into alternative programs, including the Border Patrol Police School in Surat Thani, which has agreed to accept some students. Additionally, the Pariyatti School, a Buddhist institution, has offered support for young male students who may choose to enter the monkhood, in line with the Buddhist Education Act of 2019. The school can accommodate up to 500 monks at both lower and upper secondary levels, with residency and education provided free of charge.

The Provincial Education Office is also working in collaboration with the Primary Education Area Office to create opportunities for approximately 100 additional students. Those interested in enrolling are encouraged to contact Mr. Sitthinet Hengthap, known as Teacher Chet, at 09 0642 5599 for further information.

In attendance at the meeting were religious and educational figures, reflecting a coordinated effort to ensure a smooth transition for students affected by the closure.
