The Transport Ministry has directed the Marine Department to expedite several key infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing maritime connectivity across Thailand’s Andaman Sea provinces. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic activities and boost tourism in the region.
The 740-million-baht plan includes the construction of two new piers, Ao Po Ferry Pier in Phuket and Tha Len Pier in Krabi, as well as significant renovations to Manoh Pier and Chong Lard Pier in Phangnga’s Koh Yao district. These projects form part of a larger push by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit to modernize the region’s logistics infrastructure and create new opportunities for economic growth.
Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri explained that once completed, the piers will significantly enhance maritime links between Phuket, Phangnga, and Krabi, often referred to as the Andaman Triangle. This area is well-known for its tourism potential but has been limited by the lack of a major port capable of handling both current and future marine traffic.
The improved piers are expected to reduce travel time between Phuket and Krabi from three and a half hours by road to just two hours by sea. The introduction of a new ferry route is anticipated to provide a direct boost to local economies by increasing tourism and trade, aligning with the government’s policies on regional development.
Kritpetch Chaichuay, the director of the Marine Department, revealed that 360 million baht from the fiscal years 2024-2026 has been earmarked for the two piers in Phangnga, with 175 million baht allocated to Manoh Pier and 185 million to Chong Lard Pier. These piers will be upgraded to include modern facilities such as cargo and passenger terminals, designated docking areas for speedboats and long-tail boats, and additional parking spaces for vehicles. Tourist centers with local architectural themes will also be established, ensuring the piers meet higher safety and service standards.
In addition to the Phangnga projects, Mr. Kritpetch confirmed that the funding for the Ao Po Pier in Phuket (280 million baht) and Tha Len Pier in Krabi (100 million baht) will be included in the budget for the next fiscal year. Construction is expected to begin this year for the Phangnga piers, with all projects slated for completion by 2027.
Minister Manaporn emphasized that these improvements will open up more economic opportunities for the Andaman region by strengthening its connectivity, not just for tourists but also for local industries. However, she acknowledged that securing contractors and ensuring timely delivery would be key challenges moving forward, and she pledged the Transport Ministry’s commitment to overseeing the process.
