A bill to decriminalise and regulate adult videos and sex toys in Thailand will be proposed to parliament for debate by Move Forward MP for Bangkok, Taopiphop Limjittrakorn.
In his Facebook post on July 22, 2024, the lawmaker, who is well-known for his previous proposal to liberalise the alcoholic beverage industry, emphasised that his bill aims not only to liberalise adult videos and sex toys but to legalise and regulate their use strictly for adults.
Taopiphop proposed amending Section 287 of the Criminal Code to replace the current “total ban” on adult videos and sex toys with “controlled use by adults over 20.” His proposal includes restrictions on scenes of simulated or actual sexual violence in adult videos to ensure ethical standards.
The bill also seeks to empower the Thai Food and Drug Administration and the Thailand Industrial Standards Institute to control the quality standards of sex toys and adult videos, ensuring safety and reliability for consumers.
Taopiphop acknowledged the moral concerns surrounding this controversial issue in Thailand and expressed his readiness to face criticism and consequences from detractors of his proposal.
